Beaver Creek Ski Trip Guide: Terrain, Snow, Lifts & Where to Stay
Updated October 2026 by the Charter Sports team at The Charter at Beaver Creek.
Beaver Creek is the Vail Valley’s polished, less-crowded alternative to Vail: about 2,000 acres of well-groomed terrain, a 11,440-foot summit, a walkable village with escalators to the lifts, and three ski-in/ski-out villages (Beaver Creek, Bachelor Gulch and Arrowhead). Here’s what we tell guests at our Charter at Beaver Creek and Avon shops.

Terrain for every level
Beaver Creek is known for meticulous grooming. Intermediates love the long blue cruisers off Centennial and the runs toward Bachelor Gulch and Arrowhead. Advanced and expert skiers head to Grouse Mountain and the Birds of Prey area, home to some of the steepest groomed and mogul terrain in Colorado. Beginners have learning terrain near the top of the mountain, which means great snow and views, plus McCoy Park’s gentle, gladed trails. Trails are clearly marked, and the resort app shows live grooming.
Beaver Creek also runs terrain parks for freestyle skiers and snowboarders; check the daily report for open features.
When to go and how crowded it gets
Beaver Creek is generally less crowded than Vail. Expect the most people over Christmas–New Year’s, MLK weekend, Presidents’ Day and March spring breaks. December snow is usually supported by snowmaking on the main runs, and the Birds of Prey men’s World Cup races bring world-class racing to the mountain each December. For the deepest base, aim for late January to early March.
Lifts, hours and getting around
- Lift hours: typically about 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; some lifts open later or close earlier.
- Gondola: the Riverfront Express Gondola connects Avon to the mountain, convenient if you stay in Avon.
- Village shuttles: free shuttles circulate within Beaver Creek Resort and to parking lots, and The Charter offers shuttle service toward the Centennial lift area.

Getting to Beaver Creek
Beaver Creek is about 10 miles west of Vail and roughly 2 to 2.5 hours from Denver International Airport via I-70. Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) is about 30 minutes away, and shared shuttles serve both airports. From Avon, take the Riverfront Express Gondola, a resort shuttle or the Skier Express from Sheraton Mountain Vista.
Where to stay
For true ski-in/ski-out luxury, look at Beaver Creek Village, Bachelor Gulch and Arrowhead. The Charter at Beaver Creek is ski-in/ski-out via the Elkhorn lift and Oxford skiway, and has a Charter Sports shop on site. Avon offers more value, with Sheraton Mountain Vista and other hotels near the gondola.
Beyond downhill: Nordic, snowshoeing and sledding
Beaver Creek has groomed cross-country and snowshoe trails, including at McCoy Park at the top of the Strawberry Park lift. Ice skating in the village, sledding and tubing areas in the valley, and guided snowshoe tours round out non-skiing days. Charter Sports rents snowshoes too.
Dining, après-ski and the cookie tradition
On-mountain lodges serve lunch and warm drinks across the mountain. Après-ski centers on Beaver Creek Village’s plazas, fire pits and slopeside bars, and every afternoon the resort hands out free warm chocolate chip cookies at the base.
Safety on the mountain
Beaver Creek ski patrol monitors the slopes daily, and slow zones near the villages keep beginners safe. Wear a helmet, ski in control, respect closures, and ski expert terrain like Grouse Mountain with a partner.
Beaver Creek vs. Aspen and Vail
Compared with Aspen’s four separate mountains, Beaver Creek is one connected resort with a more intimate village. Compared with Vail, it’s smaller but quieter, with shorter lift lines and more consistent grooming. Many visitors ski both on an Epic Pass.
