Denver to the Slopes: Where to Rent Skis on I-70 (Copper vs. Breckenridge vs. Vail)

Updated October 2026 by the Charter Sports team.

If you’re driving from Denver on I-70, Copper Mountain (about 75 miles) and Breckenridge (about 80 miles) are the closest resorts with Charter Sports shops, while Vail (about 100 miles) and Beaver Creek (about 110 miles) are worth the extra half hour for bigger terrain. Whichever you pick, rent at the resort, book online at least 24 hours ahead to save up to 30%, and pick up after 1 p.m. the day before so you’re on the first chair.

Copper vs. Breckenridge vs. Vail: which should you choose?

  • Copper Mountain: the shortest drive, naturally divided terrain (easy runs west, experts east) and an Ikon Pass resort. Great for day trips. See our Copper Mountain ski trip guide.
  • Breckenridge: a historic Main Street town with five peaks, lively nightlife and plenty of lodging. Best for a long weekend. See our Breckenridge first-timer’s guide.
  • Vail: one of North America’s largest resorts, with the Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin. Worth staying three or more days. See our Vail ski trip guide.
  • Beaver Creek: immaculate grooming, shorter lift lines and a polished village just west of Vail. See our Beaver Creek ski trip guide.

Why rent at the resort instead of in Denver

  1. Boot fit you can fix: if a boot hurts after two runs, you can walk back to the shop and swap it. That’s hard to do from 100 miles away.
  2. Exchanges and switches: trade sizes or models, or switch between skis and snowboard, based on availability.
  3. No hauling gear: skip roof racks and overnight car storage; several of our shops offer ski storage.
  4. Return anywhere: return gear to any participating Charter Sports shop, handy if you ski Copper one day and Breckenridge the next.
  5. Same or better price: booking online saves up to 30%. Junior packages start at $35 per day and adult sport packages at $48.30 per day at our West Vail, Avon and Copper shops ($35.96 and $43.96 in Breckenridge).

I-70 driving tips for ski weekends

  • Beat the traffic: head west before 6 a.m. on Saturdays, or drive up Friday afternoon and pick up your gear after 1 p.m. so you’re ready for first chair.
  • Coming home: eastbound traffic toward Denver is heaviest on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Leave the mountains before 1 p.m. or after 6:30 p.m.
  • Traction Law: when it’s active, you need snow-rated tires with good tread, 4WD/AWD, or chains or socks. Check road conditions at COtrip.org.
  • Mountain passes: the Eisenhower–Johnson Memorial Tunnels and Vail Pass can close briefly in storms, so pack water, snacks and a warm layer.

Book before you drive. Reserve at least 24 hours ahead to save up to 30%, pick up after 1 p.m. the day before, and return to any participating Charter Sports shop.

Epic Pass and Ikon Pass at a glance

Vail, Beaver Creek and Breckenridge are on the Epic Pass; Copper Mountain is on the Ikon Pass. Charter Sports rents at all of them, so you can ski both passes on one trip and use a single rental shop network.

FAQ: Denver to the ski resorts

Where should I rent skis when driving from Denver?

Rent at the resort where you’ll ski, not in Denver. Your boots get fitted where you ski, you can swap gear if it isn’t right, and you skip hauling skis over I-70. Charter Sports has shops at Copper Mountain, Breckenridge, Vail, Beaver Creek and Avon, and you can pick up after 1 p.m. the day before.

Which ski resort is closest to Denver on I-70?

Of the resorts with Charter Sports shops, Copper Mountain is closest: about 75 miles from Denver at I-70 exit 195, roughly 90 minutes without traffic. Breckenridge is about 80 miles, Vail about 100 miles and Beaver Creek about 110 miles from downtown Denver.

When is I-70 traffic worst on ski weekends?

Westbound traffic usually peaks on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, and eastbound traffic toward Denver peaks on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Leaving before 6 a.m. or after 7 p.m., or skiing weekdays, saves the most time.

Do I need snow tires to drive I-70 to the ski resorts?

Colorado’s Traction Law can be activated on I-70 during winter storms. When it is, vehicles need tires with adequate tread rated for snow, four-wheel or all-wheel drive, or traction devices. Check COtrip.org before you leave.

Is it cheaper to rent skis in Denver or at the resort?

Charter Sports’ online rates at the resort start at $35 per day for juniors and $48.30 per day for adult sport packages at our 30%-off shops. That is competitive with city shops, without the risk of a bad boot fit you can’t fix on the mountain.
