Skiing Vail with Kids & Beginners: Lessons, Rentals and the Best Easy Runs
Updated October 2026 by the Charter Sports team in Vail.
Vail works well for families and first-timers if you plan three things: book lessons early, rent properly fitted junior gear the day before, and keep beginners on the gentle terrain near the bases. Below is what our Vail shop staff tell families every week.
Is Vail family-friendly?
Yes. Vail has wide groomed green runs, dedicated learning areas, kid-focused adventure zones on the mountain and a large ski and snowboard school. The free Town of Vail bus connects Lionshead, Vail Village and West Vail, so you don’t need a car to get kids to the lifts. The resort also offers licensed childcare for young children who aren’t skiing yet; spaces fill early, so reserve before your trip.
Best beginner terrain in Vail
- Golden Peak and Vail Village: gentle learning terrain and easy access to ski school meeting areas.
- Top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola (Lionshead): beginner terrain with views, and you download on the gondola at the end of the day so new skiers never have to ski to the bottom.
- Long front-side greens: once comfortable, follow the green trail markers on the front side and avoid the Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin until you’re a strong intermediate.
Grab a trail map and remember that Vail is big. Plan the route back to your base before lunch.
Ski lessons for kids and adults
The resort’s ski and snowboard school offers group lessons for kids by age and ability, plus adult group and private lessons. Private lessons are the fastest way for a nervous first-timer to progress. Book lessons as early as possible for holiday weeks, and arrive at least 30 minutes before meeting time with rental gear already fitted.
Kids’ ski and snowboard rentals in Vail
Charter Sports rents junior ski and snowboard packages (skis or board, boots, poles for skiers) at all four Vail shops. Junior equipment is lighter, shorter and easier to turn, and our techs set bindings from each child’s height, weight, age and ability.
| Package (per day) | West Vail walk-in | West Vail online | Lionshead walk-in | Lionshead online |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Junior ski package | $50 | $35 | $55 | $44 |
| Sport ski package (beginner adults) | $69 | $48.30 | – | – |
| Performance ski package | $79 | $55.30 | $89 | $71.20 |
Prices are current Charter Sports rates; see Vail ski rentals for the latest. Helmets are an optional add-on and strongly recommended for kids.
Family rental tips
- Book everyone in one reservation so the whole family is prepped together.
- Pick up the afternoon before (after 1 p.m.) to skip the morning rush before lessons.
- Use free overnight storage at our Vail shops so you’re not carrying four pairs of skis to the condo.
- Swap as kids grow in confidence: exchanges between sizes, models, or skis and snowboards are allowed subject to availability (package changes may adjust the price).
- Groups of 15+ can save up to 35% with group rental pricing.

From beginner to intermediate
Most adults are ready for easy blue runs after two to three days with a lesson. Ski blues first thing in the morning on fresh corduroy, stay on groomed trails, and upgrade from a sport to a performance ski once you’re linking parallel turns. Kids often progress even faster in group lessons with friends their own age.
Staying informed on snow and conditions
Check the resort’s morning snow report, grooming report and app for open beginner terrain each day. On cold days, plan shorter sessions and warm-up breaks for little ones.
Vail kids and beginners FAQ
Is Vail good for beginners and families?
Yes. Vail has dedicated beginner areas, gentle green runs, a large ski and snowboard school with children’s programs, and free in-town buses. Its size means beginners should stay on marked green terrain near the bases.
Where can I rent kids’ skis in Vail?
Charter Sports rents junior ski and snowboard packages at all four Vail shops: Lion Square Lodge and Lion Square Lodge North in Lionshead, and Highline Vail and Streamside Marriott in West Vail. Junior packages start at $50 per day walk-in in West Vail, or $35 per day booked online.
Are ski lessons bundled with rental packages?
Lessons are booked through the resort’s ski and snowboard school, and rentals are booked separately. Reserve your Charter Sports gear for pickup the afternoon before the lesson so kids arrive fitted and on time.
Are there beginner ski rental packages in Vail?
Yes. Sport and performance ski packages are matched to beginner and intermediate skiers, with forgiving skis, comfortable boots and poles. Tell us your ability level when booking so bindings are set correctly.
How do I move from beginner to intermediate terrain in Vail?
Once you can link turns and stop confidently on greens, try the easiest blue runs on the front side in the morning when grooming is fresh, and consider a half-day lesson focused on parallel turns.
